Apple Music has launched its first radio show in Africa adding to its original programming with an expansion in the motherland. The streaming platform says “Africa Now Radio with Cuppy,” will be hosted by Nigerian-born DJ and music producer Cuppy. The billionaire heiress’ show debuted on Sunday featuring a mix of contemporary and traditional popular African sounds, including genres like Afrobeat, rap, house, kuduro and more.

The emerging genre of Afrobeat has broken through to popular culture in the U.S. and around the globe. Not surprising that Apple chose Nigeria as the home of their new show given Nigerian-born artists are leading the charge of Africa’s music scene on the international stage. Artists like Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage and Mr Eazi call Nigeria home and have dominated the Afrobeat charts.

Many people in the U.S were introduced to the Afrobeat sound with rapper Drake’s 2016 hits like ‘One Dance’ and ‘Controlla.’ In 2019, Beyonce released Lion King: The Gift featuring some aforementioned acts spotlighting music from the continent.

DJ Cuppy has been at the forefront in advocating and playing the music of African artists for years. Looks like a good call Apple.
