The Greater Washington Urban League [GWUL] presented its signature event of the year under the theme ‘Unsung Heroes’ on Friday, March 11 at the historic Omni Shoreham Hotel in Northwest.
Jim Vance, master of ceremonies and anchor for NBC 4 News kicked off the evening with light political banter.
“I am happy to be here, and I am happy to be where Donald Trump aint!,” Vance said.

Comedian and radio personality Joe Clair served as the live auction host.
The honorees that were celebrated for being heroes in their communities included Mayor Bowser, Philanthropy Award recipient Ted Leonsis, founder and majority owner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, Corporate Community Uplift Award recipient Gina Adams and the Impact Leader Award Tina Frundt, founder of Courtney’s House.
Also, thousands of dollars in scholarships were given away to local students.
Patti LaBelle performed for over an hour of some of her biggest hits. I was thoroughly impressed by her stage show and her energy. After all her and my grandmother are literally the same age.
